Manga Monday: Mermaid Forest

After last week’s Manga Monday, I pulled out some old manga I enjoyed back in middle school. One of which was Mermaid Forest by Rumiko Takahashi; the mangaka of notable works such as Inu-Yasha and Ranma 1/2. Most of her works have been made into anime and this manga was no different.

It’s actually the first in a trilogy of graphic novels published in the States by Viz called Mermaid Saga. I was happy to learn this and with the help of the internet I’ll be able to read the rest of it.  Ten years ago there wasn’t much information about it, so at the time I was lucky to find the one pictured above and a few single comic issues at my local comic bookstore.

The story centers around the premise that eating the flesh of a mermaid gives you immortality. Features Yuta the one guy lucky enough to have survived eating the flesh of one. Most people die or turn into hideous monsters called Lost Souls after ingesting some.

What I love about it is the lack of wordy explanations, the classic art, and the interesting stories.  The main character is pretty cool too.  This is the manga that got me interested in stories about immortals and not the vampire kind either.  There is also a fair amount of blood within its pages. Wonderful stuff.

If you don’t like stories about immortality or bloody gore, don’t read it.  Plus there is some brief nudity, so it isn’t for little kids. Though I think I read it in eighth grade.

Overall awesomeness, except for when it’s depressing.
